Discussion Post #4

Some scholars have argued that in the American political system, interest groups have become so strong that it has made it impossible for candidates that are running for office to look after the interest of their constituencies ( voters). The reality is that interest groups provide two pivotal resources that are needed to be successful in an election: money and votes. Based on your knowledge of interest groups and the readings/lectures assigned for this week, do you think that interest groups are necessary in a democratic society? Are there benefits to having interest groups participate in policymaking? Or, do you think that the involvement of interest groups in the election process makes it impossible for a politician to push forth an agenda that benefits the people that they represent?

Remember to include in your analysis, examples and concepts/terms from this week’s lectures and /or course readings.
